Wall City is a documentary arts magazine created to inspire conversations across the prison walls. It was born out of the San Quentin State Prison media center, where the San Quentin News staff sought, in the words of then-editor Arnulfo Garcia, to “tell important stories with more space and creative freedom” than is possible in a newspaper. Today, Wall City is a digital-first magazine; we publish one submission every other week on our website. We offer contributors incarcerated anywhere in California the freedom to report, explain, celebrate and critique the world around them, across a variety of media and forms. Our publication is designed to broaden the worldview on the current carceral system.
